It seems like Peloton quietly recognizes that app users are doing this; in addition to calling out resistance and cadence numbers (which show up on the Peloton screen) they’ll say things like “increase the resistance so it feels like the hill got a little tougher”.

It’s not objectively “better”. There are pros and cons to riding indoors vs. outdoors. I’m all for outdoor biking for those who enjoy it, but the whole ‘why don’t you kids go out and get some fresh air!’ thing from bike hobbyists is not exactly persuasive.
