There is also distrust of the Clintons on the left because of the brand of hardball politics they play. What they call “triangulation” can feel like throwing allies under the bus. The three-quarters of their allies that got in on the partial win can wave it off as “just politics” — but the allies that get cut out are

But Edwards was eliminated through self-inflicted scandal wounds. It might be hard to remember now, but going into the 2008 election he was good bet to get the nomination.

You are correct — but there are strong age and regional variations.

The real problem is that most places you don’t have advance notice about whether or not you’ll be working the summer. It makes planning very hard. Summer work somewhere else is an option, but for food service work the summer season starts earlier than school lets out, so it’s usually hard to get those jobs.

You are drastically underpaid. I make twice that as a financial analyst in a Midwest “city” with very low living expenses.

Were you just serving? Between cooking, cleaning, and serving for breakfast, lunch, and dinner these are definitely full-time jobs for two shifts.

If Harvard doesn’t already have students doing this, that means the students don’t want the jobs. Which means it wouldn’t be a low cost alternative.

I wouldn’t call the need in the summer a “tiny fraction” — probably about half of what they need during the school year. (If it’s any less than that then Harvard is incompetently managed and is leaving money on the table for utilizing their facilities during the summer.)

Reminds me very much of the interest in uncovering the true identity of James Tiptree Jr. in the late 70's and early 80's.

A couple of Christmas Eves ago, my brother-in-law was visiting, and we got to talking about first jobs, and his was a door-to-door Kirby salesman. And he was giving me the whole spiel, and some of the demos he used to run, then opined about how they really were awesome vacuum cleaners and lasted for ever.

The Navajo are also trying to reclaim the swastika.

I love this show, and you explained all of the reasons why.

I think it’s all about emphasis.

Another gaming property that has a lot of femslash is the Pathfinder RPG. One of the things that Paizo has done is create a cast of “iconics” (the official character for each class) and they have very consciously tried to make their iconics diverse by gender, race, ethnicity, age, alignment, and body type. What were

It was, in fact, horrible. I transitioned as quickly as I could.

Things may have changed, but originally the tree was an unofficial mascot associated with the band rather than the athletic department, that just sort of got popular. Similar to how for a while there they didn’t have any cheerleaders (I think they do now) so the band created the Dollies to fill that gap.

Part of being a youth-oriented culture is that we in the United States are very uncomfortable with earnestness, because it is so often associated with callowness and inexperience. Once you are mature enough to “understand how things work” you will of course adopt an attitude of cynicism and ironic detachment.

To be fair, he didn’t say that both sides were *equally* bad, and in fact implied that one was, in fact, measurably less bad.

I referenced it in another comment, but there is a book from 1999 that actually tries to draw those sorts of comparisons, called The Dark Side of Man, by Michael Ghiglieri. I highly recommend it, if you are interested in those things.

One of the best (and most disturbing) non-fiction books I’ve read was The Dark Side of Man by Michael Ghiglieri. The author was a Vietnam Nam vet who became a primatologist who worked out in the field with Jane Goodall. The book was exploring the ways bad human behavior matched up with chimp behavior, and the sections
