I know there have been instances with people in the gaming industry, be it developers, publishers, journalists, receiving death threats, but this is as far as I can remember the first time where I cannot even create the thinnest logical line between the reason and the threat.

Being aware doesn’t mean it’s reciprocated. If the object of the crush seems to be aware and doesn’t bring it up that is your answer right there.
