I think they’re saying it sarcastically. Listen to Tom Leher’s ‘Folk Song Army’ to get the joke.
Some science fiction writer with a biting sense of humor — which lets out Mr Day and his compadres — will doubtless write a scathing, satirical sf novel about this contretemps, which will leave Day & co. shouting impotently into gales of laughter, “It’s not funny!” But it will be.
It’s not an insult so much as it’s an insidious group of ball busting feminists and politically correct oppressors that they are oppressed by. I mean like, in their fantasy world. It’s a term common among MRAs and “red pill” types and PUAs.
Very well put, Charlie. If they were right, such a thing would have stuck out, but no, they’re full of it and it shows. A whole lot has been and will be said about this particular teapot typhoon, but this is a particularly nice insight.
Who doesn’t take that as a compliment? Where do I submit my application to join the Justice League?
I hung around sf fandom a little in the 70s and early 80s, when the backlash against feminism in SF was beginning. It wasn’t pleasant then; this stuff sure at hell pleasant now. Nobody plays the victim card more than conservatives, in SF or out.
Bah. You are probably in favor of peace, love, and world peace too!
Why do they think Social Justice Warrior is an insult? It isn't.
Every time I see the words “politically correct,” I imagine a group of men scoffing, exchanging annoyed glances and scratching their balls defiantly. Also high-fiving.
lol.
“If you’re looking to be politically correct in entertainment ... that’s the end of entertainment.”
Just be glad you did this on io9 and not Gawker or Jezebel, otherwise you’d be having people correct you for the next year or two.
There’s a lot of fakes. There are dozens of emails from the whitehouse.gov domain, which doesn’t even host emails. White House people use the “eop.gov” for their emails.
The chances of this being the case are actually relatively high, given that Washington D.C. has the highest rate of membership of any city (and correspondingly, the hack released over 15,000 .gov or .mil email addresses).
They’re not different people. People cope with horror as best they can. Some survive mentally and some don’t.
While in the service during the early 1980s, I encountered an elderly gentleman at a bus depot while awaiting a ride to the airport. He recognized me as being military because of my fashionable haircut and struck up a conversation. When he asked my rank, I answered E-5.
He looked thoughtful and replied. “Yep. I left…
Your humanity switches off to protect you from “humanity”. A shitty coping mechanism that is....but war is survival...and the brain and soul do their best. When mankind can't..
Galactic Community: “As long as they’re too busy killing each other to venture out here we’re fine with it. Just keep an eye on ‘em.”
It’s incredible how casual this is. It’s a whole other plane of reality that - thankfully - I have never experienced.
