I’ve heard that happens at a lot of upscale places in Dallas, but, since I don’t hang out in those places, I can’t name them off the tip of my head.

The same thing happens with entirely arbitrary “dress codes” at bars/clubs that are either clearly aimed at black people (no baggy clothes, stuff of that ilk while white bros wearing flip flops and tank tops are totally fine), or are enforced only for black people.
Thank you. I live 20 minutes from there. Its always nice to be warned about shitty places.
...stop throwing the “racist” label out as an opening volley, and instead choose to hear and consider perspective irrelevant of the vehicle delivering it... simply a good place to start... and maybe a conversation can be had that evolves into actual change...
His ENTIRE argument comes from a white male perspective. And if you’re not a white male, then you know his argument is shit. I’d rather hear him say “Maybe they have a point but this isn’t the place to make it” rather than hear him completely whitewash the entire subject matter and basically say “Shut up and play”.
This reminds me of the BS selective door policy a lot of places use.
Some bars keep you card physically when you open your tab. Others will run it first to connect it to a tab, then charge it when you close out for the night.
It’s common at bars in the US, not restaurants.
America is still struggling with chip and pin and tap to pay infrastructure and deployment. Lots of bars ask to hold the physical card and most eateries physically take your card to a single to swipe and validate payment.
To answer your questions: Yes and it’s pretty much the norm. I wasn’t even aware you can have a tab open without the establishment holding your card.
I’m in the U.K. so forgive me for asking what this bit means:

He’s allowed to say that because he’s lived his entire life comfortably ensconced inside his white male skin that has shielded him and protected him against racism and injustice. And just like a typical white male Conservative, he’s completely unable to consider any other points of view other than his own.
Who bets all those “bad people” and “racist people” he’s alluding to are, in his mind and the target audience’s, non-Whites.
Nothing worse than being called a racist? How about BEING a racist, you walnut.
I think that she’s actually... smiling.
This is before Melania figured out her blowdry-forward hairstyle, to conceal her receding hairline.

Melania is practically unrecognizable here. And the star is like an award that you have to pay for. Which doesn’t make it much of an award.
