It is a weird place to be to probably be one of the most voracious readers in your friend circle, but to never admit to it because 90% is fanfiction. I remember the one time I met another person in real life and we had to carefully ‘feel out’ how each of us felt about fanfiction, how familiar we were with it, and then

I have an MFA and I can say without a doubt that fanfiction helped me get there. It’s a great way to focus on just one aspect of fiction writing at a time—plot, dialogue, etc—because the setting and characters are already there. When I tutor I encourage my students to write fanfiction because it’s such a great lesson,

It’s funny to me that fanfiction would seem like a dirty secret to those who engage it when to (40-something) me the most striking feature of fanfiction is its utter shamelessness.

I majored in Creative Writing and began my fight to publication because of the large and beautiful fandom my fanfiction acquired.

we can count on a subset of teen girls whose coming of age consists of reading fanfiction about their favorite fictional vampires, wizards, superheroes, and band members... fucking.

Completely agree with your last paragraph. I love fanfic and still write it occasionally, but now that the internet is less anonymous it’s trickier. I’d love to easily share some of my fic with certain friends but I’m not gonna share it on my Facebook, for example. I really miss the days of LJ — but I prefer AO3 to

I’m a little older so I didn’t get into fandom and fanfiction until 6 years ago... at 34. And still going to strong with it at 40. There’s lots and lots and lots of fan writers my age and older too

I am so dead at how accurate this is. As a former writer of B2K/Bow Wow/Chris Brown Fanfiction I was DYING when I saw that last night. It honestly made me want to “revive” fanfiction for that subcatergory tbh.

My initial exposure to fanfic wasn’t even online; it was in a published book. Back in the 70's, Bantam published a Star Trek book that collected a number of fics, some better than others, and a few exemplary ones. (“Mind-Sifter” was jaw-droppingly good.)

I literally just read a Reylo HS AU yesterday. It was meh. But still fun. I love fanfiction. Its such a weird yet satisfying area of the internet.

Also, many creatives don’t own their products when they rely on companies for distribution and marketing.

She owns songwriting rights, and performance rights and gets fees from them, what she doesn’t own is publishing rights any more than an author can sign a book contract have a bestseller then re-release the book on their own.

Not only do his artists seem like hot messes, but today his has his wife dragging Swift just the way he’s had Kanye and Justin and others do. Can’t the man ever speak for himself, if he’s so proud of his business practices?

In the course of my job, I had to read thousands of recording contracts, dated from 1950-2012. It was eye opening to see how unfair those contracts were to artists earlier in the careers, but interesting to watch how they changed as artists were able to take more control of their careers and music. Janet Jackson’s

It’s interesting that Taylor, a woman who had a lot more resources than the average artists, got screwed over. Now imagine what happens to the black artists who come from poverty. I also think there’s a lot more to this story than what her side is selling. Her family had enough money to buy a 4% stake in Big Machine

Because it was only offered to her under the deal that she'd have to earn them back one at a time with each new record release. This kind of garbage is probably why she switched labels. I'm no Taylor Stan but the rights artists have over their music generally sucks.

Marriage is boring, I guess.

100% I mean her dad literally bought part of Big Machine to get her a record deal. If the deal was shit even after all that, then someone other than the record label fucked up big time. She has and always will be fine. When you look up “safe” in the dictionary you’ll see a picture of Taylor Swift.

As Michael Jackson said to Paul McCartney after buying ATV, publishing company holding 250 songs from the Lennon-McCartney catalog: “Oh Paul, that’s just business.”

Didn’t Bieber try to start a beef with Tom Cruise (?????) like 5 minutes ago? What’s up with him?
