You’re telling me a show run by old white guys who let let numerous men get away with abusive behavior for years tried to sap the personality out of the most famous beloved person on the planet, a person who happens to be a black woman? I’m shocked. The most shocking development of my very very tired life.

I don’t know the Trolls soundtrack, but damn, this really did sound like a promo song for a wholesome summer movie that I probably wouldn’t see. Not terrible, but also, not really much of anything? Except colours, so many colours.

Her cats are so amazing.

Agreed. I think they should only save that power for really bad stuff, not just criticism of a performance (although the critic also could have criticized Bieber's performance without taking a cheap shot at his mental health).

Same for the artists and musicians I know. I think the social media atmosphere amplifies the impact of negative critique. Once upon a time if you couldn’t handle negative reviews you could just not read the media reviews came in, but now social media delivers them directly to you, and your fans are usually so mad

This is so crazy to me. It’s not like she spent all day shopping for an outfit, paid retail for it, and then is stunned because some mean girls picked on her. Wearing clothes that spark comment is part of her job, and it is profitable to everyone along the line. For someone who has been dragged for her changing

There’s also the Olivia Munn piece from today (I think?) about fashion critiques that tries to make it all a Me Too transgression and includes (what I would assume) are the worst quotes. They don’t, even once, color outside the lines of mildly criticizing clothes, and this is “not empowering women.”

“Let him have his moment, sometimes we don’t need to nitpick to death”

Your point “it is an absurd take to think that only musicians can critique music” holds so much truth. One need only look at the power of two, for example, to realize that often, people with great ideas are often unable to initiate and execute them and conversely, those with the ability to do so, often lack ideas.

As someone who gets paid to tell the truth

This is sooooooo ridiculous. Seriously makes me think less of Olivia Munn.

Also this:

Naw. If you are putting out a performance or a piece of art, people can criticize as much or as little as they want. You should be putting your art out without seeking praise but because it is something you want to share.

My father is a renowned artist, with critics shining sunbeams up his ass for much of his career (I say this lovingly; he’s amazing). However, no matter the number of well-received shows or positive reviews or fans who speak glowingly of his work, it’s the negative reviews he can quote almost word for word.

I hate that she chose them for that essay because she actually had some valid points about how girls and women are expected to just take people's misogynistic hate. She should have gone after dlisted or Cdan. Those places truly  deserve it.

PLEASE ADD TO THIS: Olivia Munn’s takedown of Go Fug Yourself and the current onslaught.

After following GFY for more than 10 years, and having agreed that this might be the last safe corner of the internet, I am pretty scared that we might lose them to the trolls taking over.

I think artists are well within their right to call out critics for shitty, cruel critiques, but I think with most of the examples we have here, the critics were not wrong. I know Justin has been through a lot, I get it, but his job is to sing and if he doesn’t do that well, people are allowed to say something. In one

I’m so fascinated with this whole situation ever since I saw Lizzo’s tweet. It is an absurd take to think that only musicians can critique music. That flies in the face of criticism.

Writing is hard. I know. From experience. Which gives me the ability to tell someone that they are not up to par if they were paid 10,000k for an advance.

Add Olivia Munn coming for the Fug Girls to the list. Sure, Olivia, having some fashion bloggers write that your outfit is ugly is the same thing as being a high school student and having your male classmates rank your looks.
