I can't remember the film having a lighter ending than the book - Chris still dies. Do you mean that Kiefer Sutherland isn't explicitly shown to kill Chris? We studied that film in Year 8 and my teacher led us to connect the dots to mean that the heavy who killed Chris with a knife was probably Ace(?).
