It really is incredible how much you can save over time by chopping years off of a mortgage. In my case, I did it via refinancing maybe 3 years ago (but shrinking the time via extra payments works, too). Bought my house in 2005 - 80% loan at 5.5%, which was good at the time, plus a 10% loan at 7%. 30-year fixed.
