They are connected to the eastern interconnection, but only through limited HVDC links that can’t help with frequency/VAR support and are limited in size. They’re also connected to Mexico through similar links.

They can import over their HVDC inter-tie links, but that capacity is limited, and can’t support the frequency (so they still need lots of local generation to prevent collapse).

There are four grids in North America that are islands and only connected by HVDC (high voltage direct current) links so that their frequencies are separate.
