@Lauren Shaw: well most traditional vampires can create zombies (renfields, ghouls, brides) so they can be lords over their own peasantry.
@taosaur: still though its the protagonist gunning down and rising above the class of zombies. they are beneath him.
a note: zombies are real. Zora Neal Hurston in her book "tell my horse" documents seeing one while in Haiti.
@Lauren Shaw: one of the most empowering things about a zombie story though is that anyone can kill them. vampires fill a different niche in that you have to be superhuman to slay one either by knowledge (Dr. van Hellsing) or by blood/ability (Blade, D, Buffy).
