I am not going to get all defensive about riding a motorcycle. BUT, extreme situations do happen and yes, riding is inherently more dangerous. However, that is a statistic that often gets over-used.

I was taught the same thing in the UK with some advanced rider courses that I did. Be seen and make sure you see as much as possible too. The position of you relative to the traffic around you is critical. It really helps avoid the whole “SMIDSY” issues (Sorry Mate I Didnt See You).
