If you really can’t hear the differences between 256 and lossless, all else being equal, that’s just a matter of knowing what to hear. Once you learn to discern those things they stand out like sore thumbs on poor equipment. My setup isn't super high end but it's hard to listen to cheap speakers, for example. 

the big thing is contrast. if you only listen to music through lossless $200 wired headphones then of course the sound quality will sound worse with a pair of bluetooth headphones. but if you don’t then it’s perfectly fine. it’s similar to input delay for video games. if you have a tv with a 15 ms or faster display…
