That’s a very reasonable and humane approach. My family history is one of big swings - make a lot, spend a lot, panic, be broke... general chaos and stress. I did that myself for my first (so ashamed...) 35 years. Then I slowly straightened out.

Not to get tiresomely technical, but while you’re right about police officers, you’re wrong about the unions. The union works for, and to protect, its members, period. Police unions should have more solidarity with other unions, such as in Wisconsin, where Gov Walker shafted the teachers while exempting the cops…
