Yes, let us compare.
This week I watched The Hunt (Thomas Vinterberg's Cannes winner for Best Actor Mads Mikkelsen) and I Will Follow (Ava DuVernay's debut fiction feature).
Caught this one back at NYFF 54, and watched La sapienza shortly beforehand to prepare. Green is certainly a unique voice in the cinematic landscape. His films could easily be dismissed as slight, yet they derive a great deal of charm and warmth from that. I could not dispute someone who would be completely turned off…
Seriously, this is how it should be done. No surprise it comes from a former Dissolve alum.
Every year I try for more. Watch more cinema (both classic and new), listen to more music (especially discovering new work), finish more games (especially clearing out my endless backlog) and read m… at least a bit.
From one fellow metalhead to another: I discovered Cultes des Ghoules late year with their latest album: Coven, or Evil Ways Instead of Love. It blew my mind. Been years since the last time that happened.
None are perfect, as art and perfection are incompatible by nature. Indeed some do contain significant flaws. The list was not meant to suggest that all these works stand on equal ground to each other, but rather to celebrate the cinematic medium in its various permutations. Each offered something I found a notable…
I have seen more of 2016's releases within the release year than any year previous, yet I still have many more I want to view. Every year is a good one for cinema, provided you love it and seek out its treasures. Still, this was a special one. There are so many movies I can make a case for as the year's best. This…
This was not B-grade. I feel even your review betrays you to some extent. Easily Affleck's weakest effort as director and one of the worst movies I have seen this year. The look is distractingly artificial. The storytelling is a mess and the dialogue is plagued with exposition. There are many scenes that serve little…
I got to give it to you and your new best friend Peter Berg, Deepwater Horizon was my pleasant surprise of the year, and now I am quite looking forward to Patriot's Day.
The best comedies are often the most horrific.
Streaming on Netflix.
What part of the review containing several basic factual errors and not taking a large portion of the movie, including the ending, into account, do you not comprehend? He has seen it and offered you a different view. But of course you rebuke it, because you'd have to get off your high horse about a work you have not…
Could not agree more. In fact, I would have watched an entire series with these characters. So much fun to spend time with!
I echo the love for this one from others on here and in the review. It really is a wonderful ode to the depths of 'normal' living. Driver easily delivers the best performance of his career, and I was already a big fan. The unbelievably luminous Golshifteh Farahani compliments him perfectly.
The first girlfriend.
Maren Ade does not give a fuck. This is the reason terms like 'brave' and 'daring' should not be thrown around, willy nilly, they should be reserved for work like hers. The audacity of this film! It took me days to digest, then appreciate, then love. I was overwhelmed by what it was doing, how Ade managed to execute…
The core quintet of actors are all excellent here. Should be receiving more attention than they are. Benning is the star but everyone delivers a fully realized, unique character.
There is a good chance she will not even be nominated. The field is mighty crowded this year.
