True in NJ too. Motorcycles and Diesel vehicles are exempt from the law as it’s written, if my memory serves me. I’ve never seen anyone get reprimanded for pumping it themselves. Usually the attendant gives a friendly wave since he’s glad he’s got one less vehicle to attend to.

I’ve pumped it myself several times in NJ. As long as you’re not paying cash, you can use your credit card right at the pump. I’ve never seen a pump locked like that unless the station is closed.
