It’s less an issue of bleakness and more an issue of the protagonist flying an airplane directly into a populated office building in an act that’s meant to read as heroic.

Just change the specifics - anything other than an airplane and a skyscraper - and I bet it would work.

This looks good to me. I’m sure the plot isn’t going to be any good but it seems like they got the action right. I’m not someone who advocates for every movie to be rated R but Mortal Kombat absolutely works better with blood and gore in the fights like the games have.
