Couldn’t this be explained by something other than current? Perhaps that geometry of the pool gave the advantage (ie. if the rectangle is uneven, one side is shorter than the other).

Salary cap isn’t necessarily the issue; even without a cap, the amount team’s spend will always be limited to a certain extent (ie no team has unlimited funds). Even the Yankees have to find room for other players. And Wade would never have been the highest paid player in the big three to begin with.
