Um, if the dad was having sex with the daughter beforehand, it sounds like his story did NOT check out. That’s a pretty huge detail he left out. Maybe the rest of his story checked out - and it sounds like it did - but that’s a lie by omission right there.

You took a beating in the comments for saying the original story was hinky but the current updates suggest your spidey senses were accurate. The fleshed out/more accurate info addressed my suspicions. I hope the victim gets therapy.

Well, so much for all the people yesterday crucifying the bodega employee who didn’t the father use the phone...

Oh man. It gets worse. The suspects claim the father and daughter were having sex. Not that we should believe a rapist, but I’m not giving any father of the year awards to the newly-found biological father who took his 18 year old daughter to a park to get drunk with her.

You have good instincts. I imagine the father was initially referred to as a friend because - according to this - he’s the biological father she only recently reconnected with. He was also too drunk to report the rape.

Do you know these people? Because you are WAY invested and certain in your responses to a person who simply questioned whether the father’s story was both complete and accurate. It’s not a cognitive distortion to think there could be more to the story of a parent who drinks with an underage child in a park, then

I agree that there’s something unusual about the father’s behavior. It could have been shock and fear, it could have been that he was drunk and not tremendously effective in getting help or it could be that there’s more to the story. You’re not a rape apologist for questioning the behavior of a parent who drinks with

My initial reaction was that the father was somehow involved in pimping his daughter. That is of course wild speculation, but come on, drinking with your daughter in a park at night is not normal behavior. Maybe he set up a one on one deal and the kid showed up w/ his friends.

I think probably too much L&O (see my response to Wasabi75 a few comments down). You’re totally getting dragged. Ouch

Do you think this man was a stranger to the bodega owner? This isn’t Rekia Boyd knocking on stranger’s doors in an area far from home. Everyone knows each other in the projects. The store owners had to be familiar with him and his bullshit.

I was an actual teenager in Brownsville. As a female, you need a brother, father, cousin in order to come of age unscathed.

No regular dude runs away in the attempt to get help for his daughter. No regular dudes drink beer in public parks with their teenage daughter. A lowkey, regular dude with a normal job would be dead or injured from protecting his daughter.

This, specifically, from the NYT piece:

Something is definitely off about this case. A report said it took the dad 20 minutes to call police, which is painfully long. Maybe that was incorrect though. Drinking with his kid in a park and not having a cell phone just make the story more strange.

I agree. Something about this story is definitely off. I’m certainly not saying that a young woman wasn’t brutally raped, but something about the way the story is being conveyed by the media and the Father doesn’t seem to make a ton of sense.

Where did I say there was “more to the story?” Sometimes people read something and—shocker—discuss what they find weird about it. Considering that neither you nor I have ever heard of people drinking with their underage children in a dimly lit public park, it seems we both found it strange. Discussing what’s strange

Eyewitness reports are strange. Remember the Central Park Five, they were convicted by such reports being used to get confessions out of underage kids. These kids could be guilty, but let’s slow our riot and try and have an actual fair trial.

Clothes, yes. Dancing, not so much...unless we’re talking about Mary J. Blige, of course.

Completely charmed.
