Why did you put essay in quotes?

She and Kanye are the most thin skinned people I have ever seen.

Welcome to Kim’s Special World.

It doesn’t slut shame her at all, it was just like a funny observation. Maybe Kim and Justin Bieber should start a support group for people who don’t understand Bette Midler’s hilarious jokes.

I know I laughed at the Bette Midler joke, even if I shouldn’t have.

Resorting to “you guyssss, I’m funny too, swear!!1!” has just cancelled out whatever wit was in those tweets.

Kim, why the fuck would Bette (or anyone) try to be friends with you??!!

Except this isn’t slut shaming. It’s being a non-stop attention whore shaming. What her husband does to Amber Rose is slut shaming. Let’s all follow Kanye’s logic. You strip naked to put food on the table? Then you’re a dirty ho unworthy of love. You do it for attention on twitter? You’re marriage material! Riiiight.

Its not the slutiness people are calling her out for, it’s the desperation. She’s an attention whore to the nth degree. I dislike Piers but if you read his article it discusses just that.

She’s an attention whore, not a sex whore.

It’s problematic for both reasons. Nina Simone’s art and history are wrapped up in being a dark skinned black woman with West African features. Zoe is a light-skinned woman without those features. They didn’t lighten Denzel or make him wear green contacts to play Malcolm X.

Right and another reason I’m not letting up on Zoe is she’s from the DR. That place that at one time mandated the killing of black people darker than her, that place that continues the infliction of damage on dark skin people. She KNOWS BETTER. SHE KNOWS WHAT COLORISM IS. And how harmful that shit is. She needs to

That isn’t the fucking issue. Just fuck off.

Viola Davis, too. Nina was such a brilliant, complex person. Viola would have embodied that complexity without overacting or making it two-dimensional. (not that the mega-talented Uzo would, but I think the movie is focusing on Nina’s later years and Uzo is a bit young.)

I’ll leave this here.

At this point, I’m over anyone associated with this garbage. Nina’s daughter is essentially picking up for Saldana because of the disproportionate hate coming her way but I’m sure she’s not going to see it.

This. She had the ability to consult my girl Goog and see what Eunice was all about in her childhood and as Nina in adulthood. Her inability to grasp, let alone appreciate the struggle and blossoming of wokeness of Nina, who this woman exactly was is soul-crushing to me. I find it so tragic that Nina, the woman who

I think what Simone Kelly is pointing out though, is that maybe Zoe shouldn’t be the one who’s put in a position to defend the movie. If we’re directing our outrage at the actor, who’s role — though the most visible — is probably one of the most limited, then the kind of accountability we’re demanding is meaningless.

I agree, I don’t think she gets a break and written off as “poor Zoe,” which is infantilizing. It assumes this intelligent grown-ass woman could not have looked in the makeup mirror while they were putting the blackface on and thought “Huh, this is not a good idea. I should not do this.”

The thing is that Zoe doesn’t seem conscious of why people might be upset. It’s clear that the people she was working with are largely tone-deaf to issues of shade, tone and features. I’m most upset with that BET exec who should know better. BET has becoming so disappointing and I used to cape HARD for Comic View.
