1. the Fox/s-187/Sn-95 Mustang had a wheelbase of 100.3 in. That is not a typo. The SN-95 variant, the last version before the current s-197/D2C Mustangs, as about 69in. The car is about the size of a current WRX or EVO X.

merkur xr4ti, irs, 2.3 turbo lima, near 50-50 distribution, plus 4wd parts practically bolt on. also, volvo 16valve heads can be put on for better flow, but esslinger makes some great aluminum heads as well
Oh Ford could have done it without too much effort... of that I'm sure... just like Ford could have a RWD flagship for Lincoln today without too much effort just by reusing a lot of what is in the current and past Mustangs and then tuning it appropriately for Lincoln.
If we're talking mid 1980s, then I could see the Mustang SVO being the basis of a rally car just for that IRS alone... not to mention being more balanced in terms of weight distribution.
So, in a fantasyland where Ford not only built the Group B Mustang, but concluded, just like Renault and co, that front-engined was out because there wasn't enough space under the bonnet due to the requirements for MOAR POWERRR!!, just how big an engine could you fit behind the driver in a Mustang?
