Honestly, I stopped caring about Steam sale gimmicks way back when they had the annoying “clicker” thing. If a game’s on sale and I want it I’ll buy it, but fuck all the rest of this stupidity. It’s not even worth free stuff.

I guess my point was: the things you describe are summed up by calling it just a metroid style game, since it lacks anything really specifically vania. That’s just my particular view on it.

I always considered metroidvania to be the point where Symphony added leveling and random drop weapons to the mix. That being said, I’ve used it for games like Ori where none of the Vania bits apply and that's my bad.
