I don’t understand this trend of near-children desperate to get married.

It only matters in that it’s been brought up in almost every story I’ve read: “...and they can’t even swim!” So one assumes that’s making the rescue more difficult.

That’s exactly what I was going to say. As one of those “older, wiser” people, it’s that you gain (some) wisdom with years. At least hopefully.
