In all sincerity, the disconnect between her apprehension of the content of popular culture and the culture at large’s apprehension of that content is a window into the utter dissociation of the rich in general, and the Trumps in particular, from how life outside of their own particular, crafted, and carefully

Guys. The Root is almost always awesome. However Terrell knows almost nothing about Russian history.

Well, since I tend to be a materialist and a logical positivist, that’s how I’m inclined to feel as well, but who the hell knows? I was just commenting on Carlos Castaneda.

I’ve read Castaneda, and he was 1) something a fabulist, 2) an interesting writer of fictive, philosophical parables, and 3) sometimes a good, if not always reliable, source on some particular drug experiences. Not by any stretch of anyone’s fevered imagination as good as your basic page on Erowid, but he labored

Wrong

Turns out he’s 62 though. Dude looks good.

Popular and kitsch aren’t the same. Popular and populist aren’t actually the same either (and neither is in itself necessarily bad). I’d argue that Spielberg is both popular, and populist (intrinsically but not necessarily purposefully— he doesn’t have another mode), but neither is sufficient to make his work kitsch.

Spielberg hasn’t made a good movie since E.T., and no, it’s hardly universally accepted; it’s not even accepted. A.I., like all of his later ouevre, is kitsch.

Just like “Flight” would have been a great movie if it stops with Denzel Washington getting in the elevator, totally recovered and victorious, without ever showing any remorse whatsoever. If that movie had cut right there, it would be Citizen Kane.

If Kubrick had directed it, it probly would deserve top 5. As is? No.

Arguably Dune is a purposeful disaster, a subversion of the genre to the weird specificity of Lynch’s aesthetic. I don’t love it, but it is definitely not just “meh,” and I don’t think anything about it is accidental. It’s not Herbert’s Dune however; but Blade Runner is not anywhere near being P.K. Dick’s Blade Runner

Gattaca beats at least three or four of the films listed.

I, too, store loose cocaine in my pocket, along with assorted multivitamins.

Grossmont, whoop! My grandparents lived in El Cajon most of the time I was growing up; we lived near Escondido, in the unincorporated County.

I grew up in East County, and wholeheartedly agree.

“King George gave us this great colony! If you don’t like a tax on tea, go fuck yourself! You could be living in a penal colony where you dodge venomous amphibious mammals on the way to dig your food out of the gum tree!”

It’s the same as NCAA and WTT rules— service lets are in play.

Politics is ideology, and you should always pick the ideologue you like. That’s the point.

So you’re in favor of pay being per-set at the majors? Then a Federer 3-set win would earn him 2/5 less than if he won in 5, and a Federer walkover would earn him $0? That makes sense. That would mean Rafa should have gotten about $1.5 million less for his U.S. open championship, and Del Potro should have earned about
