Aww, I'm sorry if I spoke for Another Gay Dude. Gee.

"But that's the entirety of Mande's problem with the song."
Not true in any way. His article goes on and on about the "pandering" lyrics, about how "1/3" of the song is about Macklemore bragging that he's straight. He's specifically talking about its lyrical content, not about its lack of hooks or melody… despite the

As a gay white guy who was legally fired from his job for being gay, and then refused medical care because his doctor legally refused to give a gay guy a physical, shut the fuck up.

Oh, totally. As a song, pure and simple, it's sort of awkward and not terribly hummable, so on that level, I agree that it's not a "great song". But, like a lot of hip-hop, it gets by on heart and emotion and the need to convey a Deep Thought. It's only 'pandering' if you think the people it's addressed to would be

As an actual gay dude, I think Joe Mande's a fool. No, the song isn't "pandering", and apparently he didn't bother to listen to the actual lyrics. Oops! That's usually the sort of thing you'd do before going on AV Club to complain about a song.

My favorite was seeing Patti Smith in Cincinnati, back when it was still legal to smoke inside music venues there. Then I'd suggest watching them. They're a massive part of pop culture and are really short and easy to watch. The first three (Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi) are classic films by any measurement. By avoiding them you're depriving yourself of both excellent entertainment and cultural context.

Let me guess… Northland Mall, Columbus? Home of the wondrous prototype Limited Express, plus Sears, Lazarus, and the inevitable Sbarro. Long gone… even though it was the first mall in the country.
