1- You may not think that sexism is a big deal but plenty of people do. I was taking issue with the fact that you seem to think that people have a problem with Bob Dylan’s gender and race. It’s a strawman argument if there ever was one.

As much as Bob Dylan sucks, he doesn’t suck a fraction as much as douche wizards who say things like “edgy opinion bro.”

As you point out, this is a comparison that only gets applied to women. I’ve yet to hear someone say they preferred Jagger over McCartney because his voice covered more octaves. ( It felt ridiculous even typing such a thing, that’s how unlikely it is.)

Actually, I think the commenting culture (outside the obvious trolls) here on Jez (and formerly Gawker, RIP) is pretty decent. The signal-to-noise ratio is okay, anyway. I do wish people wouldn’t feed the trolls, but I understand that too. I am also bored at work.

I always find such comparisons a waste of time because as great as it us when a pop singer has an awesome voice, that’s not nearly as important as their ability to entertain. If great voices were essential to us opera singers would outsell all of these pop singers.

I get that people compare Madonna and Gaga because Gaga has released songs that seem to have been “inspired” to say the least by Madonna’s music. However, constantly comparing the two is unfair to them both. Do people compare male pop stars constantly? Because this is a trend when it comes to female celebrities.
