@lifeh4xor: The people in the TC forum who know what they are talking about would help you better, but I would see whether your software can incrementally backup changes in volumes after they are unmounted (I guess that's what Posco is suggesting...?). For more convenience you could then maybe run the software in a VM…
@paulf22: Internal would probably be cheaper and more convenient unless you need to access the data from a laptop. If you really can't decide there are hard drive docks that quickly allow you to use internal drives externally
