I think it’s also about leaving baby-mama alone at the time when she most needs the help. And you (figurative you, I’m not assuming that you specifically have done this) can say you’re still going to help, be there, etc. but the feelings run so high that it gets in the way of that, and she’s extra alone at that time.

“dexterity of an inebriated giraff”

As a nurse, I can confirm that there are a lot of mean nurses. They are mean for a variety of reasons, but there are lots of assholes in the profession. Ignoring this and romanticising nurses only perpetuates the bullshit message of nurses as angels/natural caregivers and not what they really are: hard-working medical

I think running the story is a great idea, but you can’t draw attention to the issues faced by the nursing profession without discussing the internal issues as well. One of the internal issues is certainly the nurse-physician dynamic, which is a gender-stratified interaction and therefore appropriate for the scope of

I’m not a fan of these “let’s support profession XYZ” stories.

I think female residents have it worse that the RNs actually. Dealing with the good old boy network of old school physicians can’t be fun.

Yeah, and more and more doctors are women. We too face a lack of respect, not only from our male colleagues, but also from our nursing colleagues. And now you too ignore us.

Why isn’t it possible to have a discussion about uplifting and supporting nurses without being condescending towards doctors?

Oh I thought you were being mean to me :) I totally agree that there is a definite narrative that everyone has to loudly proclaim that nurses are infallible and doctors are asshole baboons that make me shake my head. I LOVE the nurses I’ve encountered, they really give excellent patient care, but I’m also really glad

I think people defer to doctors because they have an MD, not because they are “more powerful in the hospital hierarchy” and not humble. Nurses are awesome, but they’re not doctors, and I think you can sing the praises of nurses for their hands-on work with patient care without denigrating doctors....
