mk4 Golf TDi. Last time I checked, 2003 was this century...
Amen to that! In my last backpack in Grand Canyon, we had to carry a crapload of extra water on day 1 to cache for later on in the trip and to handle a dry camp that first night as well, so having some practice meant that the 50lbs in the pack that first day was manageable and not miserable! Thankfully, once we…
Oh, another training tip from my wife- wear shoes one notch less-supportive during your training whenever it’s safe to do so. (i.e. if you’ll be wearing a full hiking boot, wear a pair of low-to-mid-height hiking shoes, or if you’ll be in hiking shoes, wear a lighter weight pair of athletic shoes or the like)
1000% agreement here. I’ve done 3 long backpacks in Grand Canyon, and the best prepared I’ve been was the year that I spent virtually every free afternoon/weekend doing training hikes with full pack weight on my back.
Sure there is.
Eh, the timing belt and water pump jobs get easier every time, and aren’t really that difficult in the scheme of things. Also, the interference aspect just isn’t a problem if you’re on top of regular maintenance.
Yeah, no. Sure, the clutch is a big project on the 944, no question, but in no way should it be a 30 hour project. Unless you’re freshening up a LOT of other stuff on the way by, in which case good for you- that’ll save a bunch of time later.
It fails the upkeep test if you have a shop do it. That said, if you buy a 944 and plan to pay someone else to maintain it, either you don’t care for your money very much, or you’re a moron. With labor rates easily ending up in the $125-200/hour range, that’s going to add up FAST.
Miata =/= practical... They’re manageable for normal stuff, but I’d hardly call them practical due to the minimal storage/hauling space.
Seems like the extra 20-ish hp that the late models get you (if that) would be more than offset by the extra 300-ish lbs of bulk...
Amen to this. And regardless which one you get, they’re WAY more practical than that silly Honda S2000... (not that I don’t want one of those, too- they’re still awesome)
DO IT!
I would have picked up a 911 of some form back around 2006, but there’s the practical aspect of being able to fit an upright bass in it. Not gonna happen. So I bought a 944 instead. On the plus side, I’m not terrified of driving my car because it’s worth way too much money.
That’s been my thought regarding all of the cloud storage options- you’ve been able to run a local Plex server for a while that uses a cloud provider for the actual storage, but the liability concerns always seemed to outweigh the usefulness.
If Michigan is anything like Indiana, there aren’t any inspections, emissions testing, etc., so it very well could be completely legal.
Am I the only one that thinks that looks fantastic, and like it’d actually be comfy and not overly hot? Sign me up.
You bet- enjoy the winter, and you’ll definitely appreciate how incredibly quick the heat starts working in these cars! I don’t know what they did different, but you can cook yourself out of a 944 in no time, even after only a couple minutes of running.
Unless you’re somewhere completely insane, I say do it! Winter tires just aren’t that expensive, and the 944 is actually a great car to drive in the snow as long as you’re up for being attentive. Just make sure you switch over to the winter tires in time- a 944 with all-seasons or (god help you) summer tires in the…
Amen to that! Some of the fiddly bits are hard to come by now, but the aftermarket support is fantastic as well!
