It's easy to get along with a community when there isn't much of a community to get along with! Avery Island (the home of Tabasco) is basically the Tabasco plant, a gift shop, and some gardens that the Tabasco empire arranged artfully. A fun day's trip, but no real town to speak of.

The medical withdrawals are pushed on students, primarily to make the student no longer the university's problem. If they're not a student, and they're therefore no longer on campus, then they can't be a legal liability if something happens.
One of the creepiest things about this is that she was an athlete, therefore she was probably receiving better treatment/care from the university than your average student would have in that position. Sure, swimming isn't one of the marquee sports, but it comes with some additional campus privileges.
