Tasha's got the right idea (though I prefer Spirited Away over Totoro, I guess Totoro might be safer if we're talking about getting something for EVERYONE including the youngest of children). Miyazaki's probably the director I evangelize the most about.

More violent than Raiders? I don't remember anyone's face melting off in Cagliostro. Still more PG-13 than the usual Miyazaki fare, though, if that's the comparison you meant to make.

Totoro never got me teary-eyed, but Arrietty now does that to me. Especially the second time I watched it with my mom, with the context of my mom's best friend babysitting for a young girl slowly dying of cancer, not totally unlike Sho/Shawn.

I actually thought the ending of The Tree of Life was the most hokey part of the movie. The childhood stuff was amazing, the dinosaurs and creation were at least good eye candy, but the ending felt utterly unnecessary and just dragged on forever. Really, if Mallick was going to cut down Penn's part to the point it

Cary Elwes is gonna get all the awards for his turn as Bobbly-Wobbly in The Oogieloves in The Big Balloon Adventure, I just know it!

I'd nominate "My son, they were only slaves" as being up there.
