Wow, I somehow forgot (or never realized) that all those movies came out in the same year.

@avclub-7b5f14465722bf69660753fe50094014:disqus , your quaking dick notwithstanding, two things: first, what's compelling in a comic book movie isn't necessary what's compelling in a more down-to-earth (I'm not going to say 'realistic', but it wouldn't be the wrong choice of words) story.  Genre matters.

The constant knocks on Quarles'/McDonough's appearance have been one of the small, underappreciated joys of this season.  I still like to imagine McDonough coming into the writers' room saying, "C'mon, guys, too far."

The answer is obviously Raylan.  Raylan shooting people is better than anyone else shooting people, with the occasional exception of Tim in sharpshooting circumstances.

I was thinking that I'd like his first speech to the rent boy a hell of a lot more if it turned out it was all bullshit.

@avclub-2d0cca95ad6a2061d208d765e79af478:disqus  Does a person like Quarles occur in real life?  I think it's probably pretty fucking rare that boys get pimped out by their heroin-addicted fathers, get taken under the wing of a mob family, are given the opportunity by said mob family to murder their father, then grow

Wait, so you agree it's "too neat," but it's not "inaccurate" or "lazy"?  What can else can "too neat" mean?

And … that's just what it means for something to be "too neat."

@avclub-792b765aa995daf26cf6f17f519c949d:disqus , everyone starts off saying "I may be into some weird shit, but I ain't into scat."  And yet, people end up getting into scat all the same.
There but for the grace of god, my man.

@avclub-2d0cca95ad6a2061d208d765e79af478:disqus , I mean, sure you can imagine a show where that's all the Mags stuff felt like.  But Justified did a really top notch job in giving those little indications of depth that made it feel like more than just "because backstory, that's why."  Whereas Quarles, however

Maybe there is hope.

I should say, the first scene with the boy and the "my daddy fucked me up" stuff notwithstanding, that final monologue was pretty ace stuff.

See, this is exactly what I disagree with.  A psychopath, especially one who has gone "completely off the rails," might be entertaining (and McDonough definitely is), but I don't find it compelling.  And maybe that's just a matter of taste, but I do think there's something … I dunno, too easy about making the villain

You … haven't spent much time on the internet, have you?

Searcy should just get his own line of the night category, because it's awfully tough to top Art.

There was also the Seinfeld reference: "What, am I gonna have to be Dickie's butler?"

Because it's like something you'd come up with after taking Psych 101, mostly.

I loved Boyd's scheme to get Shelby into the Sheriff's office; that was pitch-perfect.  And, c'mon man, of course Shelby's gonna cause trouble for Boyd.  The scene with the deputies showed he's not one to fuck with, if one was inclined to doubt as much.

Nah.  Scott puts it extra-fucking mildly when he calls the psychology (and I use the term loosely) of Quarles "too neat."  I mean, I like him, and the scene-chewing is fun in its way, but … nah.

Nick was on fire this episode.  I don't think I've laughed at his lines more than a couple times this season, but he was cracking me up constantly from the moment they stepped into Mulroney's office.
