50% of this episode felt like the show runners trolling smarks on the internet by putting as many fan-favorites as possible in harm’s way. Gimple & Co. know we expect Negan to murder a major character on arrival, so they’re giving us as many suspects as they can.

Fully agree with your last paragraph: introducing Captain Marvel seems like a great way to give a new generation a lynchpin character that feels different. Keep the old guard around for cameos, let the new guys fight Mephisto (or whoever).
