On top of that, the game is long — monstrously long. You could have a birthday in the time it takes to complete a Monopoly game. It's the endless exchange of cash — the adding, the subtracting, the making of change — that makes a humiliating process even more protracted.

This also helps when you're saving for a one-time expenditure like a vacation or a down-payment for a car or house. You sort of "forget" that money when you're trying to live within your means, and it can build up pretty quickly when you divert raises and other "extra" money into that account.

exactly this. I was the stereotypical resolutioner at the beginning of the year but decided to keep it at home. six months of free-weight and calisthenic routines combined with a change in diet has surprisingly gone quite a ways.
