Even if they didn’t touch the power train, there are plenty of other aspects to modify.

This vehicle’s specs kinda remind me of my old 2000 Civic CX (EJ6 hatchback)

The Y7 tranny is also very long. If I recall, you could hit 72mph in 2nd gear.

You’re over exaggerating how little power this vehicle has.
Adding additional gears also adds additional costs.
Especially if the company didn’t already have a 6 or 7 speed transmission already available to use, and not have to R&D
