You should check out MK8 then. They did a really good job of making this game less reliant on attack items and more dependent on player skill. Mushrooms are far more common than red shells and other attack items so it's up to the player to navigate a course well enough in order to win more than it was in past titles.…

If you think about it, it was the lack of towns that hurt Skyward Sword. Because they didn't spend enough time world building, the game didn't have that same feeling of life that other titles had. There were no interesting races to meet or NPCs to get to know outside of the small Skyloft.

3DS would make the most sense. They usually drop the DQ games on platforms with the largest install base and right now that's the 3DS. They could opt for PS3 but by the time it releases the PS3 will be even older. Still played by millions though, obviously.
