I think the biggest problem is that they abandon the facilities, they could always convert them into something, not sure what, but they could. The US always uses the facilities well after the games. The facilities from the Atlanta games are still used today by Georgia tech as a rec center, student housing, ect.
Even then it's just the "futbol" fans. The Olympics appeals to many sports fans and its all about friendly competition between nations, not vuvuzela blowing.

The ease of getting to it is what carriers won't like. They enjoy charging extra for tethering while most people don't use it, or claiming that they offer free tethering banking on the fact that most people wont use it. When it is front and center like that many more people will presumably use it.

I think it's actually pretty common to not have a facebook, most of the people I know have deleted their accounts or never had one in the first place.
