Think it's a US/UK thing. It definitely rhymes with cat in Britain. Always sounded very strange to me when I'd hear the other pronunciation in US TV/movies.
Think there was something about it in the Jon Ronson book The Psychopath Test , though I forget exactly where the data came from.
