Better question: why do people live in large cities at all??? They are totally horrible places to live. I know - I lived in one while I was an undergraduate in college.

One point Alex missed is the way it teaches young children not to trust government. This is an excellent lesson. No matter what country you live in, trusting the government is never a good idea.
