I’m so sorry - wedding talk sucks. Congrats on your tenure track job, though - that is wonderful and brag worthy!

I went on a skin care buying spree last night. I restocked my supply of Paula’s Choice products and ordered a few new things (both of their eye creams and a lip balm) It was 20% off/free shipping/free full size retinol serum if you spent $65, so I loaded up on travel size stuff to get to $65. I also ordered the Drunk…
I’ve had great luck with titanium earrings - no itching whatsoever. They’re easier to find these days. It inspired me to get piercings # 2 +3.
You’ll still get lots of rich kids/poor kids experience even if your income distribution ranges from 40-90%. Also, Silicon Valley house prices in the mid 70's went up very dramatically (sort of like now, LOL) so it was common that the new neighbors make a lot more money than people who lived there for a while.
I was 16 when Pretty in Pink came out and I hated it for the same reason.
My parents separated when I was 7 but never divorced. My mom was unemployed when I was in high school. We were probably lower middle class considering my dad’s salary was divided between two households in an expensive area. They were really frugal and made it work. I remember being acutely aware of finances, but it…
I haven’t see Lady Bird yet, but my high school experience (Silicon Valley, 1980's) was similar. There was a large lifestyle difference between lower and upper middle class even back then, and it may be wider now.
Agreed. I like to shop and enjoy a bargain, but I’m a misanthrope who hides on Black Friday.
I bought Goodyears for the first set and was going to do the same for the current set, but the tire place ordered the wrong size and then sent someone over to their partner store and got what they had in stock, which was an off-brand (Antares). They were cheaper and are grippier than the Goodyears, so I was happy with…
I did this with my PhD thesis. I wrote it at night while powered by gin and tonics, then edited it during the day. FWIW I am a perfectionist and spend too much time crafting ‘perfect’ sentences when I’m sober.
I’m in the Finger Lakes, so we have hills and snow. I say go for it! Snow tires are great, esp if you have a car without all-wheel drive. There were times when I saw people with the exact same car as me have problems when I was barely even noticing the snow.
This. My period box is a box of tampons sent via Amazon subscribe + save once a month. This and some dollar store snacks probably make me as happy as a pricy box that doesn’t have enough tampons or snacks for perimenopausal me
It’s a 2 hour drive in upstate NY. I can always claim lake effects snow or other bad weather, and sister in law has already told me not to feel obligated if the weather sucks. This is one reason I have a great sister in law
As an introvert, that sounds lovely! I hosted a 25 person friendsgiving today and it was great, but my husband is travelling on Thursday and I was really looking forward to chilling on my own with the cats. I was sort of disappointed when I got invited over to my sister in law’s.
I’m livid about this and have been making a lot of calls and Twitter callouts to my asshole Trump fanatic congressman. It’s cruel and really shortsighted. Because of grad school, I make appx 2X what I’d make without it. I also got to work at a startup and make a lot of money and pay a lot of taxes from my stock…
I could’ve done it back when the Democrat-Republican divide was more about raising vs lowering taxes, but now that the Tea Party/Trump are in office I’d nope out of there ASAP.
I rarely wear more than eyeliner and tinted lip balm these days, but I love buying makeup. I’d vote for a lip sampler or maybe an eyeshadow sampler with a boatload of colors? That way she can play around and also figure out what colors work well for her.
same here.
This is a great idea. I have been a regular commenter here for many years but am perma-grey these days, for no apprent reason other than yet another kinja overhaul or perhaps because I don’t comment as much during the week,
I’m lazy and don’t care about crusts, and there are a lot of folks who don’t eat gluten here, so I do a crustless pumpkin pie - it’s always very popular. Just use whatever recipe you like (I use the one on the back of the pumpkin can but add more spice). If you have a big can of pumpkin (30 oz?) you can just use a 9 x…
