I’ve started wondering about unionizing and wondering why there didn’t seem to be any momentum.

Vivendi owned Blizzard from its start. Vivendi and Activision merged. That was about the peak of World of Warcraft, making Blizzard highly visible (and profitable), so they put them on more equal footing in the merger (in the name, at least), despite Activision/Vivendi owning Blizzard outright.

Given that Blizzard jumped into bed with a giant back before it was even Blizzard, and that corporate ownership was what allowed them to exist and be successful in the first place, “short term” is relative. In this case, a lot longer, relative, than the lifespan of most game studios.

Hopefully this is a lesson for the smaller game makers. Don’t get swallowed up by the big dog just because its the easy way out.
