Well, I learned not to wear earring when it comes to rolling in the hay, to put it like that :). Or to take them off. Still, that pair of earrings haunts me even now. And it was not even worth it :(

No, I don’t even want to talk about FSOG. The worst fight ever I got into with my mom was over it. It lasted almost 2 months, until I gave up. I haven’t read it. She did. And I’m so tired of the line “good women can change bad men.” Please, mom, cut it out already. You couldn’t change dad and fantasizing about it now…
Whats’ with hook-ups and lost earrings? On my first and only one-night stand (yes, I am a prude, sorry), I lost one of my beloved pair of amber earrings (yes, I know, not diamonds, but I loved those earrings). I don’t know which I regret most even now: the one-night stand or the earring :)

About time!
I see what you did there: “I will - NOTE! - be voting for a Democrat.”
Mine’s was in the washing machine. At least he got out before a new load, thankfully.
I can actually imagine a lot of Republican politicians saying that.
I starred the comment because of the them :).
MrOh and me call it “lovingly hating each other.”
And that means we still have long way to go in teaching empathy.
Yes, I believe teaching empathy is the key here. Parents and professors should focus on that. Some do, but many more don’t. It’s hard to look over your own privileged position and empathize with someone whose experience we will never have. But that, in my opinion, is the key to a wholesome education, be it at home or…
I am sorry you had to go through that. I think you are right: a rapist is not a SF monster. But I would not call him/her a fully human being nonetheless. Most humans, at least is my idealistic world view, would be able to abstain from rape. Men are not biologically programmed to rape, no matter what MRA sites would…
I wish I could star you more. You argument is so eloquent, it should star much higher.
The problem is not that we think they are monsters.... No, the problem is precisely that we realize that they are our sons, and husbands, and fathers, and brothers. And what does that make us? The ugly truth about ourselves - that we supported and encouraged them, that we contributed to the behavior, albeit…
I don’t know about that. Hubris -pride - is thoroughly punished in Greek tragedy. He felt he was someone who can get away with it - hence, pride - and he did. Where is the actual punishment? If he were to suffer like Greek heroes in tragedies, he’d be blind, dead, buried alive or some such thing.
As a lurker myself (lost my Kinja account and I’m back now with a new one, hence invisible), I just wanted to say I am truly sorry for what you’re going through. A random internet person’s thought may count for nothing, but still, I wish you all the best.
I’ve been in your shoes and it sucked. I suggest, if you can afford it, to see a counselor. For me, it took a couple of sessions and I was on my feet again. For my husband, it took longer, but he is in a better place now. If you cannot afford it, talk to really close friends or family.
Just moved into a new apartment, in a new city, in a new country. Moving sucks! Kudos to you for handling it so well.
I had students your age and above. They did great in my class (very difficult thing to learn). Age is never a limit. In fact, don’t we get wiser as we age? :) Congrats on taking your CPA.
