I agree a simple piece of metal isn’t really that simple, and I actually think it’s more difficult to get right than a hatch strut. The reason cited for the rear coil spring recall was that the metal would become brittle, which makes me speculate the cause could very well be any of the issues you mentioned.

I agree with that. However, it could also be Subaru intentionally under-spec’d for cost cutting reason.

I agree a strut is not as simple as say a coil spring, but it’s not that complicated either. The concept of this device is over a hundred years old and hundreds of billions have been made. Moreover, this is a strut to support a hatch, not the weight of a car.
