As I understand it, after reading this article, the issue was the inclusion of Max Richter's "On the Nature of Daylight", which featured prominently in Shutter Island. The Academy ruled that voters would be "influenced" by the inclusion of that piece when making their decision. It follows, presumably, that the

A score shall not be eligible if:

1. It has been diluted by the use of pre-existing music, or

2. It has been diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs or any music not composed specifically for the film by the submitting composer, or

3. It has been assembled from the work of more than one composer.

I shall watch The Red Turtle.

It's a really stupid rule, at least in terms of inconsistencies in implementation. Why can't they judge the parts of the score (most of it, in this instance) that *are* original?

I won't be able to attend/crash the wedding, but, as I recently said in a best man's speech, "I just want to tell you both: good luck, we're all counting on you".

It's a shame that Jóhann Jóhannsson's score for Arrival was deemed to be ineligible. Them's the rules, I guess.
