I didn’t really notice them until now! lol I was too mesmerized by its overall silhouette to pay attention. Now that I see them, yeah, not a huge fan either.

Still breaks my heart, and it’s been years since this concept was released. Volvo’s newest V60 and V90 wagons actually look good, but nothing they made has been this elegant and beautiful :(
Neutral: Pontiac. That one still cuts me deep. They were JUST getting good, with the G8 and Solstice, which was a pretty decent little roadster (or coupe, depending on your preference). I know not everyone agrees with me on this, but to see Pontiac die and Buick live on only due to its popularity in China (which, last…
That’s just it; it’s a spectrum, but most people don’t get that. When they see plastic body cladding, some lift and a tailgate, it’s automatically a crossover and nothing else.
Really good points. Also the term “crossover” gets tossed onto everything these days; it’s a selling point; I’ll be fucked if I ever heard the term “stationwagon” in a dealership in the last 10 years.
It’s kind of where I’m at with my ‘18 Outback. I got it because it’s still stationwagon-y, even though Subaru made big efforts to turn it more into an SUV thing (they call it a mid-size SUV in Canada) - and while it sits really high off the ground, I found it still handles better than most other crossovers I…
Damn, already did.
Yup. Know the feels. I drive a 2018 Outback with the 2.5; it’s slow and doesn’t ask too many questions, climbs stuff. I essentially own a mountain goat.
People are obsessed these days with standard features, and automakers have all been in a hurry in the last few years to cram as much tech as possible. That also kicks up the price, but consumers gobble it up regardless; I mean, hey, it’s the bank’s money, not theirs (in most cases).
Fair enough.
99% of people can’t tell the difference and don’t even know what a stationwagon is, let alone relate to one visually. To most, a crossover and a wagon is the same thing.
Would you argue that this is a crossover? I am legit just asking, not trying to be a smartass - because I hear the argument all the time about that the Outback is a crossover, despite that the only thing it has different than the Outback sedan is that it has a tailgate.
Can I just say this? I FUCKING hate crossovers. I hate the name and everything it stands for. I hate how it’s become so goddamn popularized in today’s world and how it slithered its way into modern car design. I hate how people can’t tell the fucking difference between a fucking stationwagon/lifted stationwagon/lifted…
“What does that even mean?”
This should be fucking framed and posted everywhere.
Ground clearance has nothing to do with it. Zero. The AMC Eagle had more ground clearance than all other cars on the road. Did that make it a Cherokee? Nope. It was still a car with a wagon body and a lift. The Equinox is designed from the ground up as a crossover, whereas the Outback is adapted to look like an SUV.…
I own an ‘18 Outback too. There are no official rules; they’re guidelines to what makes a stationwagon a stationwagon. It doesn’t make it “dumb” it just makes it your opinion. Still doesn’t change the fundamentals of what the vehicle really is. You are right that Subaru has gone to great lengths to make the Outback…
The current-gen Outback headroom is 1037 mm vs 1017 in the Legacy, which isn’t that great of a difference. The Outback’s overall height is 1680 mm vs 1500 mm in the Legacy, but that’s because of the added lift, the bigger wheels and roof racks.
