I think the writing, acting, directing and cinematography has everything to do with the stifling, inescapable feeling of the latter seasons of Breaking Bad. There was a conscious shift in tone towards something darker and more claustrophobic as the story moved towards the endgame.

It may work in the UK, but that doesn't make it ideal.

I'm sorry, but 14 episodes split over two years with a "midseason finale" in the middle to split the two halves, is really two seasons of 7 episodes.
