Right, because racism is dependent on a power dynamic. Using a racial slur towards someone (historically, economically) on top doesn’t have the sting when uttered to someone (historically, economically) on the bottom.

You’re making a great point, but I do think lumping “Indians” and “Redskins” into the same bucket might be a mistake. From what I understand (as a honky myself), “Indians” is often the preferred term even moreso than Native American, while Redskins carries a much different meaning.

Some Indians find the term Indian offensive and prefer Native American, or First Nations, or something else. Some Native Americans do not find the term Indian offensive and, I believe, prefer it. I make no claim to knowing what the more common attitude is right now among a geographically far-flung culturally diverse…

At the same time, there are plenty of people who believe they aren’t racist but actually are. See: “black friend” defense. The real point is, though, that even as imperfect as “racist” might be, it’s the closest you can get to a term that is as offensive in implication as a racial slur directed at a minority.

The issue here is that someone who is *actually* racist would not care if you called them that. The reason people get upset when called “racist” is because they’re actually *not* racist and they would never want to be thought of as one.

I think the Caucasian shirt is effective enough for the point it’s making, but it really gains teeth when you replace the “Indians” or “Redskins” with actual racial epithets.
