I guess I get it - the problem is they are beloved pets. My kids like the chickens, but they are definitely not beloved pets, they understand very well that they are food. I don’t think it’s screwed up if they understand where meat comes from.

Why are you joking? We raise chicken (as well as rabbits and goats) and my kids were aware of the slaughtering from the start, been present since they were 2 years old. They haven’t done it themselves yet, because the oldest one is only 4, but they will eventually.
