The entire discussion just shows how bad tipping is and what it does to people. “Golden rule” ... What bizarre framing of an absurd expected intransparent concept is that? A percentage of a bill... Why not just give a clear fair final price on the menu? Why to hide and make the restaurant look affordable and then

Golden rule my backside sorry I'm not leaving an 80 dollar tip unless you spit fire and do a jig with a plate on your nose bringing me my order

The whole tipping thing should go away and useless chattering by the salty waitress and those like her should shut up and start a go fund me for those who are needing their intervention. And then do something useful like administer those funds instead attempting to put folks on guilt trips because they still believe

How dare you tell this man to spend $50 on a simple pour?I!?! It doesn’t matter what’s coming out of the bottle, I’m tipping $5 a pour at the most! If I were you I’d tip 20% on the meal +$5 and call it a birthday. You’re a sucker if you do what the Salty Waitress told you to do.

On what planet does it make sense to give someone $50 for pouring a few ounces of liquor from a bottle into a glass? There is zero skill involved. If they were making a complex cocktail or something involved, I would tip for that, but still not $50!  Tip culture is asinine if that's how it's supposed to work!

Former bartender and waiter here. This advice is ridiculous. 15-20% is guidance. Once we get over $100 on a bill, I take no offense with that tip dropping to 10-15%, etc. Chances are, you’re ordering expensive items on the menu and I’m doing the same amount of work. That said, I scale that up based on the restaurant.
