The school can defund a program or decide to not fund it in the future. But, they can not, by law censor work or force students to alter their work as my school attempted to do. If they went to trial, they would have lost because they wanted to censor our work. The law was on my side.

Whether or not this is a clear cut violation of the first amendment is something that requires a first amendment lawyer to chime in.

When I was in high school, administrators tried to censor the newspaper I led and was a part of. We ran stories on drug use in our school, politics, 9/11, gay rights and deplorable bathrooms (no stalls or doors, just rows of toilets).
